“Hope is the deep orientation of the human soul that can be held at the darkest times,” said Vaclav Havel. For Mark J. Lindquist, a United States Air Force veteran, it is that enduring hope that illuminates Ukraine’s darkest hours. When President Zelensky appeals to foreign volunteers to come to Ukraine and enlist in the newly formed ‘International Legion,’ Mark answers the call. He enlists in the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine with the hope of assisting evacuees trapped in cities under siege. When another volunteer, Amir, hears Mark sing, Mark reveals that he has a career singing the U.S. national anthem for the NFL and NHL and is the lead singer of a Swing big band that regularly tours America. Amir persuades Mark to apply his musical talent to bring moments of joy to the battle-torn country. They gather local musicians to form a big band willing to risk their lives to tour across Ukraine. With Mark as the spirited leader and vocalist of the show, the musicians perform Swing music concerts in bunkers across the country to bring Ukrainian civilians and soldiers residing in besieged zones escape and relief from the terror and anxiety of war.

Did you know that the field of psychoanalysis is only about a hundred years old? It began with a young doctor named Sigmund Freud. Freud believed that people could be healed by releasing repressed emotions and experiences. Then, a few years later, Carl Jung took this a step further, developing the concepts of the archetype, and the collective unconscious. Jung studied different religions and cultures across the globe, and believed firmly that dreams serve to compensate for neglected parts of our personality. Dreams, by their definition are a solitary experience. Being inside them often feels confusing and isolating. Music, by contrast, has unified humanity for millennia. Many believe that the very act of hearing musical tone connects something inside all of us to a larger whole. Using his unique background, Dr. Michael Mollura, has found a way to intertwine music and dreams into a singular harmony.

Approximately 10,000 years ago, humanity shifted from hunter-gatherer tribes, to systematically developing processes for growing and storing our food, which ignited an Agricultural Revolution the world over. We’ve innovated irrigation systems, farm machinery, refrigeration, pesticides, seed modification – expanding mankind to cover nearly every piece of land on our planet. But nature wasn’t set up for growing single crops across thousands of acres, as well as feeding a population of more than seven and a half billion. Today, 30 million Americans live in food deserts, along with several billion people across the globe, who do not have access to healthy and fresh foods. With many mouths to feed, we grow large volumes of food in concentrated areas, perpetuating a feedback loop of climate and soil degradation. But what if you could take a farm, and locate it anywhere? What if there was a way for crops to be independent of the ecology and resources of a place? What if we could grow food 365 days a year, on a fraction of water we currently use and without pesticides or chemicals? Erik Ellestad began with this idea – improve global health by building a better food system.

Architecture is one of our most visible and long-lasting forms of expression. Since the time of the Pyramids in Egypt, to the Pantheon of ancient Greece, buildings have been an expression of our culture. In the last 150 years, a unique form of artistry has developed, changing the way we view the urban environments around us. Why can’t building materials be more adaptable? Why can’t they function more like clothing, or even human skin? Intelligent design in nature has perfected itself over millions of years, so, why aren’t we using more of its principals? Biology major at Princeton University turned architect, Doris Kim Sung, has taken smart materials that respond dynamically to temperature change and is turning the field of engineering design on its head.
